Why?

Why is summer vacation so long?

Why is it so hard to fit exercise into my day?  I've tried it all---early morning, late night, and various times in between---and it's just not working.

Why can't a seven- and a nine-year-old manage the simple task of draping their wet bathing suits over the bathtub?  It really isn't that hard, is it?

Why do the aforementioned kids complain that they can't find a dry bathing suit?

Why do swim diapers cost so much?  I wish I would have come up with that money-making scheme.

Why do my kids seem to think that any snacks we buy at Sharp Shopper must be consumed within three business days or they will disappear into thin air?

Why do the catastrophic spills and angry fights always happen when I've just closed the bathroom door?

Why does Joshua dump out any open container of liquid?  "Uh oh!" he says, like it was an accident.  Perhaps it's an uncontrollable urge, like when I have to spit from high places.

Why does Kate feel that "reading time" is a punishment?  If that's the case, I'd love to be punished for days on end!

Why do Luke and Drew suddenly hate baths?  I thought boys don't hit their "but I LIKE to be dirty" stage till junior high...

Why does my heart melt when Kate hands me her handwritten notes, every other word misspelled, telling me her true feelings about a given situation?

Why do I savor it so when Joshua tries out a new word?  "Stuck" and "elp" are his two most-used ones, which pretty much sum up his adventurous lifestyle.  Despite the horrors of teething, I guess I like this stage after all...

Why does it make my day when Luke wraps his arms around my neck at bedtime and momentarily plays with my ponytail, just like his baby days?

Why can't I stay upset with Drew in spite of fresh infractions every hour?  Does he have to be so dang cute?

Why is summer vacation so short?

  1. I could've written the post myself (substituting names of course)! With a few additional questions...How do a 1 year old and 2 year old pull a quart of oil off the very top shelf in the garage all over one of them? What possesses a 3 year old to take the bag of tortilla chips (mostly crushed ones left) to his bed to eat them (I'm still finding them). And I was so excited that the 2 year old tried the word "pickle" at supper time (I admit it was "icle" with some guttural sounds, but remarkable all the same). I love summer...but I do miss the extended naps...no one sleeps as long simply because they "know" their siblings are out here somewhere (reading or something).

  2. Carol: Buy a couple of cloth swim diapers! Seriously. We're cloth diapering with Brennan, and I just use one of the covers as his swim diaper. :~)
