Way Beyond "Cute"

Back in November 2010, I wrote a blog post entitled "God at work in my children."  I wrote about a lunchtime conversation I overheard between my children, when Kate led Drew in a "repeat-after-me" prayer to ask Jesus into his heart.  I thought it was really cute, but Drew was only four at the time, and I figured he didn't even give it a thought since then.  To be honest, I hadn't!

Until last evening.  I went upstairs to see if the boys were making progress in getting ready for bed.  Keith was in their room, and they were in the midst of a conversation about "what to do when we feel afraid."  I sat on the floor and listened.  Turns out the boys were scared that somebody would crawl in their window.  Keith prayed with them, but also suggested that they pray, too.  Drew piped up, "Yeah, but I don't even know HOW to pray!  I only ever prayed one time in my life and that time I followed what Kate said."  Keith and I looked at each other, drawing a complete blank.  Drew is never the kid to volunteer to pray.  So he elaborated..."It was one day at lunchtime in the kitchen and you guys were somewhere else."  Luke broke in, "Oh, I remember that!  That was when Kate helped you ask Jesus into your heart!"  Drew grinned.  "Yup," he said, "that was the time!"  Keith questioned him a bit further, and Drew knew exactly what had happened that day.

Something stirred in my memory, and I thought I might have written about that, so I looked it up and sure enough, it was all there....and we realized that something important really did happen that November lunchtime.  I don't think I'll be so quick next time to brush off as "cute" and "childishly touching" the life-changing things that God is working in the hearts of my children.
