For several months now, Kate has been begging for a Bible story before bed. There is something fundamentally wrong with denying such a request, so we oblige whenever possible. She stretches out on her stomach so the storyteller can "tickle" her back while they tickle her ears.
Now the catch to all this is that it must be a story she has never heard before. Between a great kids' program at church and Bible class at a Christian school, she is quite familiar with the usual stories about David and Goliath, Jesus' miracles, and the like. So....she's heard about what happened to Lot and his family after they escaped Sodom, Jael and the tent peg murder, left-handed Ehud and the obese king who enveloped the sword, how Mephibosheth became a cripple, King Saul's final minutes, Paul's snakebite on Malta, who Rahab really was, the exploits of David's mighty men, Elisha sending a bear to devour boys, and Rachel's trickery over the stolen idol.
Tonight I told her about Job. Either she had forgotten about him, or else the details were new, because she listened with rapt attention. She sighed contentedly at the end, especially when I said he had three more daughters who were the most beautiful girls in the whole land.
But I'm running out of "new" story material. What's your favorite little-known Bible story?
well, I was fascinated with the story of Naboth's vineyard when I was little. And how about when Nebuchadnezzar lost his mind and ate grass like an ox?And you probably told her about the brass serpent when the snakes were biting the Israelites. When Kate would ask me for a story she never heard, every one I started to tell, she already knew. So I know what you mean...
ReplyDeleteI guess you'll have to switch to prophecies! :-)
