Sometimes it seems that life is full of big decisions, looming crises, and weighty discussions. Over the past two days, I jotted down some of the little things that bring joy to the journey.
Extra-dark chocolate with pomegranate pieces, a special surprise from my mom.
Handel's "Water Music." It adds a cultured touch to the chaos of my house. It also triggers good memories of going to the Fulton Opera House with Keith when our favorite composers were featured. (That was in a previous life...)
Poking around at Goodwill with my 9-year-old daughter. She loves scarves, purses, and shoes. I love books and jeans. I like solid colors--orange, red, brown, blue. She gravitates towards sequins, sparkles, wild prints. But we both love to spend time together.
Tea and conversation with friends who aren't too timid to share, or too ashamed to cry, or too serious to laugh.
Hearing Drew say, "You're Da Best, Mom!" with a thumbs-up...(this was especially sweet because we have not gotten along very well lately).
Watching Luke's eyes light up at the sight of a new box of Cocoa Puffs. I figured out a long time ago that the path to his heart is through breakfast cereals. (When I REALLY want to say "I love you," I buy the variety package of mini-boxes.)
The realization that the days are getting ever-so-slightly longer.
A fresh arrangement of our living room furniture that makes the room seem brighter and warmer. (Neither are simply psychological factors. It's brighter because the huge front window is no longer blocked; warmer because the heat vents are no longer obstructed by sofas.)
Listening to Joshua babble in his baby language. I only wish I knew what he is talking about; he has all the inflections and mannerisms of intelligent conversation....
All four kids sleeping through the night TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW! That's gotta be pretty close to heaven.
I totally agree!
